This year, COP, the annual global meeting that brings together world leaders, scientists, non-governmental organizations, and representatives of civil society to discuss actions to tackle climate change, was hosted in Brazil, near the Amazon Rainforest.
From November 10 to 21, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference took place in the city of Belém (PA), promoting international debate around the theme of sustainability.
For entrepreneurship, COP30 s an opportunity to adapt businesses to sustainable practices and to the new demands of national and global markets, transforming the business environment in the pursuit and implementation of innovative solutions that are conscious of their environmental impact.
Specific Goals for 2025
With a focus on advancing global negotiations to limit the increase in the planet's average temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as stipulated in an agreement signed in 2015, the 30th edition of this event represents a major opportunity for discussions on climate change and global sustainability.
In this edition, with the presentation of the second round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), each country's climate action plans presented more ambitious commitments than the previous ones, as there is an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Main topics
The topics discussed during the 12 days of the event included:
1. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Adaptation to climate change.
3. Climate financing for developing countries.
4. Renewable energy technologies and low-carbon solutions.
5. Preservation of forests and biodiversity.
6. Climate justice and the social impacts of climate change.
The main challenges for COP30 included:
Aligning commitments on climate financing between developed and developing countries, ensuring that emission reduction targets are in line with climate science, and addressing the socioeconomic impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations.
Brazil's participation in climate negotiations
Brazil has a history of active participation in multilateral forums on climate, having hosted Eco-92 and Rio+20.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) fwas formed during Eco-92 in Rio de Janeiro, giving rise to the COP, which stands for “Conference of the Parties”, whose signatory countries have been meeting annually since then.
At COP30, Brazil was expected to demonstrate efforts and solutions in combating climate change in areas such as renewable energy use, biofuels, sustainable or low-carbon agriculture, and forest conservation.
The decision to select the city of Belém as the host, announced in 2022 during COP27 and formalized at COP28, em 2023, in 2023, reflects Brazil's commitment to highlighting the importance of the Amazon in the climate debate, as the largest reservoir of biodiversity and as a climate regulator on the planet.
However, just one month before the starting date of COP30, fon October 10, 2025, a law was approved and enacted, with some vetoes, allowing the expansion of deforestation in the Amazon region.
The full schedule with the timings of the panels at the Brazil Pavilions at COP30 was released on October 20 by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), together with the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic.
In these pavilions, the Brazilian and international communities discussed climate change mitigation, the 30 strategic goals of the Action Agenda, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Climate Plan, in 286 events across 4 auditoriums in the Blue and Green Zones. Detailed information about the schedule, including moderators and panelists, is available on the MMA website.
